The suburbs are vast, and everyone is looking for that parent that’s just like them. This month we’re taking a look “Behind the Trike” and meeting the parents who bring Lake County to you every day. Today we’re meeting Loralie, the “mom who swears…sometimes”.

So why are you the “Mom who swears….sometimes”?
It’s not as if I go around cursing like a sailor, but sometimes emotions run high. I adore my children, would give my life in a heartbeat for them, but they can be frustrating. Nothing can ever really prepare you for the frustrations that come along with being a mom, but sometimes a four-letter word sure can describe it. I feel my moniker captures that and says, “Hey, I’m not always perfect, and that’s okay.” I think we need to laugh at those moments, apologize when necessary, move on, and not beat ourselves up about our mistakes.
I think being the “Mom who swears… sometimes” also shows that mothers can be multi-faceted. We all didn’t magically morph into June Cleaver upon evacuating a child from our bodies. And while my children are the number one thing in my life, they are not the only thing. We need to honor who we were before children while embracing what children have made us. I’m still me, but an evolved version of me, who only swears sometimes.

What would your kids say about you?
I don’t know, let’s ask them.
The 5-year old: “Your lips are pinkish. Your bottom lip is pinkish. Your upper lip not as much.” The 3-year old: “That I love you. That you’re nice. That you’re pretty.”
What room in your house would you be most embarrassed of if someone dropped by unannounced?
My Master Bathroom. I have literally had nightmares that my friends have wandered in there. You wouldn’t be friends with me if you saw it. You know how they say exposure to germs builds a stronger immune system? I am putting that theory into practice.
Favorite activity?
I love to make home-cooked meals from scratch. I could tell you about how I believe in whole foods and how teaching cooking skills empower your children to make healthier choices, but the truth is I like to cook because I like to eat. In the field of eating, I have cultivated a wide body of research.
On a serious note, because I have struggled with making healthy choices throughout my life, giving my kids the tools to make better decisions has been a priority for me. But since I AM the “Mom Who Swears… Sometimes”, you will also sometimes find my children with a cupcake in hand, probably from Cacao Sweets & Treats.

Best class or activity you have done with your kids
It’s a 1-hour drive away, but my whole family loved participating in the Animal Day for Families at the Angelic Organics Learning Center in Caledonia. We are looking forward to returning for one of their spring programs.
Hidden gem or local event that you don’t want to miss in your town?
My husband and I are excited for the Grayslake Craft Beer Festival on Saturday, May 31st, 2014. There will be over 100 brews from more than 30 different breweries, and tickets are on sale now. It seems to me with events like this and some of the new businesses we’ve seen pop up in the area, Grayslake is slowly taking on a more sophisticated appeal. I only hope this trend continues! Sometimes I like to trade my yoga pants for fancy pants.
