If you have a train lover, you probably already know about the fantastic O-Gaugers exhibit that visits the Fremont Library once a month. There is another excellent {FREE} exhibit going on now through February 23rd that you may not have heard about and don’t want to miss!

All Aboard! A history of Railroads in Grayslake at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum may sound like something for adults and history buffs, but it’s great for children too, and it’s free! The large space allows plenty of room for toddlers and older kids to move (a.k.a run) around without fear they will break anything. When you arrive, the attendant will get someone who comes in and runs the trains just for you.

He was very friendly and told the kids about the trains and answered all their questions. There are many neat train artifacts that older kids will enjoy seeing and learning about, such as old lights and crossing signs.
The second room is set up for pure train fun. There are some old train seats to sit on with a collection of train books to read. Kids can leave a hobo message (message on a chalkboard), ring a real train bell, or build and play with their own DUPLO train set.

My kids had a great time, and if the toddler didn’t need a nap, they could have spent a very long time there. While we were there, we also visited the annex, where they have a vintage fire truck and lots of vintage tools and equipment. The boys, my husband, and son – age 7 could have stayed in there all day.
The train exhibit at the Grayslake Heritage Center ends February 23, so get in soon!
