What was the catalyst that started your business?

I’ve always loved capturing moments with photography, but it wasn’t until I left my job in the corporate world that I felt the freedom to purse a photography career.  I had a career in market research after obtaining my MBA, but made the decision to stay at home once I had my kids.  I still wanted something for myself, something I could use to grow and keep learning, and found photography filled that need perfectly.  It’s something I truly enjoy.

Has it been difficult to get your business up and running, while being a stay-at-home mom, managing a household, etc?

Being a stay at home mom in general is a lot of work. Photography doesn’t make it any harder, it just gives me a creative outlet.  A lot of my work is done in the evenings or weekends.

What is the best thing about your job?

I love being able to capture memories for families, as well as the personal satisfaction I get from learning, practicing, and doing something I enjoy.  I also like the flexibility that comes with making my own schedule and have a job that fits my personality.

What do you do to recharge?

I love relaxing in the evenings, reading a good book, and biking in the nice weather.

What is your inspiration?

I’m inspired by my own two kids as well as many of the families I’ve photographed.  My dad, who is also a photographer, is an inspiration.  He’s taught me to always put myself out there and try new things.  We have different photography skills, and it’s great to learn from one another.

What is the most important thing you want our readers to know?

I love what I do, and I hope it shows in each photo session.  I love getting to know each family and providing photos that capture the personalities of the children.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I love all the opportunities for growth – there is always something new to learn and some way for my to challenge myself and not remain stagnant.  I love working with kids and families.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

Trying to find enough hours in the day!  I feel as though I’m constantly balancing spending my time with my children, my husband, and having time for my business.

How long have you been in business?

I officially started my business this year. I started portfolio building last year with other families and building up my brand.

How difficult was it to get your business up and running while still caring for your children and other responsibilities?

It was a lot of work.  A lot of thought and effort went into building the website, packing, and doing portfolio building.  It was all fun and a great learning experience though.

Amy Duffy Photography is offering a free mini session (30 minute session with 10 proofs presented in a private online gallery) and a free 8×10 print.  All other prints and products sold separately.  Session must take place at an agreed upon location within 15 miles of Riverwoods, IL before December 31, 2013, just fill out the Rafflecopter below.

  1. I would live to have a family session with my hubby and little guy. I’m also in need of a professional headshot. So both or either! As for location… I am open. Love the outdoors. Maybe the beach it Independence Grove. Thanks!!

  2. It’s always nice to see a mom who has found a way to stay home and work also. I bet it’s lots of work. I love the above pictures.

  3. It would be wonderful to have some shots taken of my 2 year old son. Family shots would be nice as well. 😉 We are fairly new to the area and would be open for suggestions for the location. Butler Lake Park is right down the street and so is Independence Grove. Both have beautiful scenery.

  4. I would love to get family pics done! Hubby travels so much so it would be great. They are only young once and growing so fast 🙂

  5. My son turns one 5 days before Christmas. I would love to capture some holiday/birthday photos. As for where, I’m not sure. I love outdoor shots, but it’s really chilly this time of the year.
