Research has shown that reading is the foundation of all learning for children. However, many low-income families do not have books at home for their children. Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Forest is committed to changing that by “connect[ing] children needing books with books needing children.”. Since 2009, they have distributed more than 1.1 million books to at-risk children throughout the Chicagoland area. They currently serve more than 50,000 children in Chicago and it’s suburbs, each of whom will receive at least 12 books a year from Bernie’s.
Bernie’s Book Bank accepts new and gently used books year round, and they work very hard to process, sort, and appropriately distribute the right books to the right kids. In preparation for the holidays, Bernie’s is currently running a virtual book drive for Christmas. Contact the group to organize your own collection and make a donation, or check the map for drop off locations in your area. In addition to accepting donations for individuals, they also work closely with schools, businesses and other groups to run large scale book drives.
This is a great opportunity to speak with your kids about the importance of both literacy and giving. In anticipation of the holiday season and the spirit of helping others, consider donating books with your children this month.
