I love museums, but with small children we tend to stay away from museums that don’t offer super flashy fun for the kids because we don’t want to spend an arm and a leg to leave after 45 minutes and many choruses of “Moooommmmy, I’m boooooored”. Thankfully, each summer we are able to enjoy the Blue Star Museums.
If you are affiliated with the military in any form, you might have heard of this program. It is a program that offers free admission to over 600 museums across the country for active duty military, National Guard and Reserve members, and up to five immediate family members. The program runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
There are a surprising number of museums participating in Illinois and Wisconsin this year, including Chicago Children’s Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and Chicago Botanic Garden, just to name a few. Some are just a few hours away, such as Madison Children’s Museum, which could be a great overnight trip (just a three hour drive!).
So if you or your spouse are in the military or are a reservist, take advantage of this amazing program. I hope you will get to see some museums that you wouldn’t normally go see. I know I will!!
