Get up Close with Butterflies at Butterflies & Blooms {Glencoe}

The Chicago Botanic Garden is once again wowing visitors with the opening of it’s Butterflies & Bloom exhibit. Butterflies & Bloom is located on the lawn of the Learning Campus in a 2,800 square-foot white mesh enclosure. The exhibit opens for the season this weekend (May 25) and will run through September 2.

Butterflies & Blooms

We were able to experience this exhibit last year and it was one of the kids favorites. If you have a strong stomach you can see the video my son made on the Little Lake County YouTube Channel {it’s a little shaky}.  The exhibit {which does have an additional fee} immerses you in a tropical habitat full of hundreds of butterflies. I wish I was a better photographer so I could show you how many! There was one tree that was simply covered in them, like leaves.  I have been to several of these exhibits and this one by far had the most butterflies visible.

Butterflies & Blooms

Butterflies & Blooms features butterflies from around the world as well as those native to Illinois. Volunteers are on hand to answer questions  and tell you about the butterflies.  There are also these great cards available with pictures of the butterflies and flowers you could see. They are great to keep older kids entertained in a game of “eye spy”. Visitors can also observe butterflies emerging through a window into the pupa emergence room. The Botanic Garden says you could see up to 500 butterflies on most visits!

Note that there are no strollers allowed in the exhibit so if you have a non-walker you will need to bring a carrier or hold them. There are lots of rocks around the edges and while some of them are for getting a better view they are not meant for climbing and can be slippery so if you, like me, have an adventurous toddler keep a tight grip on them!

Butterflies & Blooms

The Butterflies & Blooms exhibit while enclosed is not weather proof and will be closed on occasion due to weather. Exhibition hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (weather permitting) through September 2. The exhibition will close at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 21, for the Summer Dinner Dance, a benefit supporting the Garden’s conservation, education and research programs.

Cost is $6 for adults; $5 seniors; $4 children (3-12). Members receive $1 discount off these rates; Garden Plus members are free on Wednesdays. A ten-visit pass to the exhibition is available for $45; members receive $5 discount off this rate.  Butterflies & Blooms is made possible through the generous support of The Grainger Foundation, Lake Forest, Illinois.
