Have you been to Carmel Catholic High School Street Scenes yet? Why not? It is honestly the most fun and original fundraiser I have ever attended. I look forward to this event every year. And it’s been a mainstay at the school for 42 years. The 43rd event is scheduled for February 10 and 11, 2017, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on both nights. And the party continues on well past midnight. The Friday and Saturday evening fundraiser is open to the public, and is for only adults ages 21 and older.
But who says the late-night, party-going grown-ups get to have ALL of the fun? Senior citizens are invited to preview the event on Sunday, February 5th, at 2:00 p.m. And Student Night, for youth in sixth through eighth grade, is on Thursday, February 9, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Student Show will be presented on this night, along with food and games.
This year’s theme is Carmel Street Scenes Spaces Out, and features food, drinks and amazing entertainment. Enjoy more than 50 live bands, countless comedy showrooms, and a Las Vegas style Casino. Touted as “Lake County’s Winter Break,” it is a celebration that does not disappoint. My husband is a Carmel Catholic High School Alumnus, which is how I found out about this event 18 years ago. I have been coming back every year since.
Upon arrival, plan to have your coat whisked away by volunteers and then choose a time to see the Student Show. Then enter the wonderland of a transformed school where countless restaurants, bars, theatres and even a casino await you! It is social butterfly’s heaven. Even though I did not go to school here, I run in to so many friends, co-workers, neighbors and acquaintances from the community. The first time I attended, I laughed all night long as we bounced from comedy show to comedy show, and later relished in the delicious pancake breakfast served at midnight.
The most magical part of Street Scenes is the Student Show. I am blown away every year by the talent. I never think they can outdo themselves, and then, they do! I sit in the audience with divided thoughts: part of me is reliving my high school days, and part of me is wishing I was on stage with the students. I even find myself singing along. I feel like a mom to every student performing because I am so proud of all of the students and how hard they work to produce a successful show. Last year, my husband got dragged onstage by a friend, which was almost just as entertaining as the Student Show.
I love this fundraiser because it represents the blood, sweat and tears of the students. The kids take days off of school to transform classrooms into theatres, comedy clubs and casinos. The Street Scenes fundraiser contributes more than $300,000 annually to support the academic programs at Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein.
Make Street Scenes your new February tradition. I will meet you at the Irish Pub!
