Playground Profile: Clifford Park

Antioch, IL

Tucked behind The Scout House (a landmark to anyone from Antioch) is a park known as The Clifford Park. As far as I know, the park doesn’t officially have a name, and there is no signage. The park was originally built for students attending Camp Crayon in The Scout House, but it’s open to the public.

Located at the corner of Cunningham and Poplar, this small tot park is a great place to stop when running errands in town or on a walk. The Antioch Aqua Center, Antioch Library, Dunkin’ Donuts, Cafe Book, and many other shops and restaurants are all within walking distance of the park, too.

Although the amenities of the park are nothing to rave about, it is conveniently located and usually empty. Occasionally you’ll bump into the day campers in the summer or pre-school students during the school year, however, I rarely see anyone there.

From the one picnic table you can see the entire park. There are no blind spots to lose a toddler in, and it is set very far back from the road. The park isn’t shaded or fenced in, unfortunately. Clifford Park is a good playground to visit with toddlers, especially if you want to let them play and climb independently. It is a safe set-up for little ones, usually free from big kids, and a great place to let them run.
