‘A merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!’ cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew, who came upon him so quickly that this was the first intimation he had of his approach. ‘Bah!’ said Scrooge, ‘Humbug!’
It’s the holiday season, and people like Scrooge are getting just coal in their stocking.
Show your youngsters the magic behind the eloquent writing of Charles Dickens in Antioch as A Christmas Carol comes alive along the streets of historic Downtown Antioch. The life-like characters from the creative mind of the British writer are part of the annual Dickens Holiday Village, which has activities and displays both indoors and out.
Watch Olde England come alive in Historic Downtown Antioch as life-like figures are caroling, working and so much more. Each collection of statues has a backstory placed beside it as 27 different storylines are displayed while you enjoy the charm of Antioch boutiques, gift shops and restaurants.
Begin your Dicken’s Experience at the Dicken Welcome Center located inside of Hannahs on Lake Street. There you will enjoy Dickens style hospitality, receive your free walking tour brochure, and learn about special events and other happenings in the village.
This volunteer public art exhibit has 45 different mannequins spread around in different poses acting out scenes. You’ll see the happy side of the Dickens Era and also experience the sad side of Dickens as you see young children working to help support their families.
On special Saturdays throughout the season, there will be additional family-fun interspersed with the Dickens Holiday Village. Street musicians, carolers, and Scrooge himself to name a few! On select Scrooge Saturdays, kids are encouraged to find scrooge roaming and ask for a penny to receive a bright shiny new penny and a bit of grumbling! You can find a full list of events and activities on the Dickens Saturday Fun website.
And so, as Tiny Tim said, “A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, everyone!”
