Embrace a Solider this Holiday {Highwood for the Holidays}

Northern Lake County may not feel like your typical base town but Great Lakes is home to the Navy’s only Recruitment Training command. Each Year approximately 38,000 recruits pass through The Naval Station at Great lakes. According to the Navy the average population at Great Lakes is 25,000, that a lot of sailors and soldiers away from their homes and families this holiday season.

This Sunday December 2 the City of Highwood and the surrounding Highwood Community is recognizing the servicemen and women stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes and Fort Sheridan Reserve with a celebration to make them feel at home.

Highwood For the Holiday

3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

{17 Highwood Avenue}

This FREE event is open to the public to be part of as the downtown area transforms into a magical winter wonderland with food, hot cocoa, photos with Santa, chestnut roasting, live holiday music by Matt Fedderman and Friends and special addresses form local dignitaries.

This event is made possible and all the more special by community involvement. Resident in Highwwood and the surrounding community are encouraged to come out and show their appreciation to the military by coming out to dine with them that night and to decorate the luminaries that will line the streets and light the way as the sailors and soldiers march cadence through town.

Beyond coming out to support and participate in the the event the city of Highwood is in need of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help line the Military;s lighted march path with luminaries. Volunteers should meet at City Hall at 3:30 pm to begin filling the decorated luminaries with sand and candles and to place in line on the streets. Volunteers are also needed to be part of the lighting team at 4:45 p.m..

If you can;t make the event you can still support the sailors and soldiers that are away from home this year.  You can sponsor the Highwood for The Holidays by purchasing gift certificates that will be given tot he military. These gift certificates can be used at local businesses throughout the day to help in purchasing gifts for their friends and family or the enjoy a meal. Gift certificates can be purchased online before the event in $10 increments.

Local dignitaries will address the Military personnel at the honoring ceremony from 5-5:30 p.m. The troops then march in cadence along the lighted luminary path to Oak Terrace Elementary School {240 Prairie Avenue}, where an exclusive dinner, supplied by local restaurants, will be held for them at 6:00 pm.
