Truncated version – Marsh tour only – BUT we will talk about Volo Bog and bogs in general.
Saturday & Sunday 11:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday
Our one-hour public tours of Volo Bog are “Truncated.” We’ll start in the Visitor Center and take in our 10-minute video then hit the boardwalk as far as the marsh zone. The autumn is a time of preparation in the marsh, with a variety of plants setting seeds – cattails are fluffing, wool sedge is getting wooly, and ditch stonecrop is sporting its salmony-pink button-like seed heads. Watch out for tick-seeds to ‘tick to your socks and pants! Insect songs are filling the air space where bird songs once were. A closer look can reveal a long-horned meadow katydid. A peek into the water with dippy cups reveals diving beetles, pygmy backswimmers & a variety of snails. Our tours are ideal for individuals, families and small groups of nine or fewer. No reservations are needed, except groups of 10 or more, please phone 815-344-1294 to arrange a private group tour.
