Lake County is home to some great theatre for adults and children. During the holiday season though I like to treat my musical theatre loving girl to a day in the city. It’s an exciting adventure to see the city all decked out in it’s holiday finest and feels fancy for her to go to the city for a show.
Here are some family friendly shows happening this season, and some deals available for you as well!
The hit Musical Million Dollar Quartet has extended it’s stay AND added some Family-Friendly shows. This Tony Award winning rock ‘n’ roll musical has set a new record for longest-running Broadway musical in Chicago. The musical is inspired by the famed 1956 recording session that brought together legendary rock ‘n’ roll icons Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley and is fun for the whole family.
Tickets for the family nights are buy one, get one free – one child under the age of 17 will be admitted free with each adult ticket purchase. The performance on these nights will be a perfectly family friendly 90 minutes and will feature special gifts and giveaways. The whole family will be on their feet dancing, clapping and singing along. Family Nights are January 11, February 1 and March 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Nothing says holiday theatre in Chicago like A Christmas Carol at the Goodman Theater. This adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story is a beloved Chicago tradition, produced every year at the Goodman. Share the story of the Nutcracker in a fun and modern way (perfect for little boys like mine who don’t like ballet!). The House Theatre of Chicago’s wholly original, ballet-free version of The Nutcracker returns with its fantastical deconstruction of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s time-honored holiday story. With lots of humor and heart, this fresh theatrical interpretation centers on young Clara’s journey to save Christmas. his modern holiday production weaves together riveting dialogue, astonishing puppetry, original song and spellbinding imagery to tell a heartwarming story of love, loss and hope.

If you are a traditionalist and the Nutcracker must be a ballet than you must add this premiere event to your calendar. Since premiering in 1987, Joffrey Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker has become America’s favorite Nutcracker, touring coast to coast more than any other. This beloved holiday masterpiece for the whole family features the entire ballet company, plus local children’s choruses, young dancers and the Chicago Philharmonic performing Tchaikovsky’s famous score live
If you want a slightly different take on the classic Nutcracker ballet done by the Moscow Ballet. Moscow Ballet’s famed Great Russian Nutcracker, a dazzling holiday tradition that features gorgeous Swarovski crystal-laden costumes, life-sized matrushka dolls, 10-foot-tall silk puppets and a show-stopping “Dove of Peace” formation in which two dancers become one bird with a 20-foot wingspan.
