Fun for Big Kids: Grayslake Central High School Summer Sports Camps

A few years back, a friend of my daughter’s told me about the summer tennis camp at Grayslake Central High School.  I was reluctant to pursue her lead at first because I had never heard of the program and wasn’t sure if I could register so late into the year. (It was already June 1 – talk about dropping the ball!)  But it turned out to be one of the best summer activities we have ever done in Grayslake.  In addition to the youth tennis camp, GCHS offers a huge variety of sports programs for boys and girls in 4th grade and up.  Many of the camps are only 1-2 weeks long, but others span the entire summer at prices that even this cheap mama can get excited about!

Not only do kids get to try the sport of their choice, they also get to interact with high school athletes, meet the coaches and use the amazing facilities at the high school sports complex.  Besides tennis camp, my budding athletes have participated in the basketball and volleyball camps with rave reviews.  The Summer Sports Camp at GCHS is my first stop for affordable summer sports programs close to home.

Fortunately, many local high schools offer similar fun and affordable programs for kids as young as kindergarten.  Below is a list of summer camps I found by doing a quick internet search for “summer camp” on each high school’s home page.  A little internet searching of your own may yield even more hidden gems in your town.
