Grand Opening of the DUNN Museum – Saturday March 24 FREE

The Dunn Museum is a Little Lake County partner.

The Lake County Discovery Museum was a favorite of my family and Little Lake County, and its absence has been felt. Well that all changes this weekend as the Lake County Forest Preserves opens the doors on its brand new Bess Bower Dunn Museum!

The Lake County Forest Preserves moved its collection and the museum to the new location on Winchester Road in Libertyville over the last two years is now ready to show off its new and improved space — with the focus shifting just slightly to really show off the history and people of Lake County. We got a sneak peek of it and is truly an engaging space that tells the history of Lake County. We’ll be bringing you a full look inside next week but first, the celebration!

DUNN Museum Grand Opening Celebration
Saturday, March 25, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
1899 W. Winchester Rd., Libertyville, IL 60048

The event is FREE and will be filled with fun for the whole family!  In addition to exploring the museum and gift shop (featuring local Lake County artists) there is also a full day of fun planned.

  • Coffee and desserts in the lobby all day
  • Paleoartist Tyler Keilor will present at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
  • Guided tours of the museum begin at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Tours will last approximately 30-45 minutes.)
  • The Teich Family reading room will be open from 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

There will be hands-on, kids’ activities and crafts all day long:

  • 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Dinosaur Touch Table
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Make Dinosaur Masks in the North Shore Gas Education Classroom
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Wigwam Artifacts in the First People Gallery, Wigwam
  • 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Storytime in the Woodland Theater
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Settlement Games in An American Frontier Gallery, Schoolhouse
  • 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Lotus Flower Craft in the Lotus Boat
  • 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Gears Station in the Innovations and Preservation Gallery

History buffs and curious minds will want to check out the presentations they have lined up:

  • 11:00 a.m. Underground Railroad
  • 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. (45 minutes each) Native Presentations
  • 3:00 p.m. Gatling Gun

Note the museum is located on the first floor of the Lake County Forest Preserves offices. Turn onto USG Drive across from The Chapel and the Libertyville Soccer complex and follow the signs. It’s the first driveway on the left when you enter, and you will see the curious doors to enter:
