After living in Lake County for over a decade, I was truly surprised to learn about an event that is new to me, but not new at all to the Gurnee community. “Jackie’s Magic” is a fundraiser which is celebrating its 11th year in 2014. This annual magic show is held every fall at the Warren Township High School in memory of Jackie Stanislawski, a 2001 graduate of Warren Township High School. After Jackie was tragically killed in a car accident in 2003, her family and friends discovered she had been running her own food drive.
Jackie’s magic continues those efforts by collecting food and cash donations for the Warren Township Food Pantry. In return for the community support, Jackie’s family hosts a fabulous magic show featuring the talents of many amazing magicians. My kids ages 8-13 all loved the show – which we attended last year. The acts were appropriately humorous and not scary, although kids younger than 7 might be disturbed by those that involve “swords” being pushed into boxes containing people, as well as some loud noises.
This year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Warren Township High School O’Plaine Campus from 5:45 – 10:00 p.m. Admission is a donation of non-perishable food items. There will also be a raffle held before the show with proceeds benefitting the Warren Transitional Students project for the special needs students at Warren. The show will begin at 7:00 p.m. on the stage of the Auditorium. Jackie’s magic is one of those hidden gems that reminds my family why we love being part of the Lake County community. It’s a great event for a great cause. For more information, check out the website at www.jackiesmagic.com.
