Kid-Made Mother’s Day Gifts for the Non-Crafty Dad {2016}

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8–and it will be here in the blink of an eye. Give the moms in your life a thoughtful, kid-made gift with help from this Little Lake County guide. You won’t have to buy supplies, search YouTube for a video, or dirty the house. It’s a win-win situation for both Dad and Mom, and the kids–who will have loads of fun at any one of these drop-in workshops or local art studios.

Drop-in Mother’s Day Projects

Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1:

Ongoing through May 31:

  • Country Bumpkin {Mundelein} Make a FREE gift for Mom. Children 12 and younger can make a free “Mom Pot” flower pot to decorate and plant with an annual. Download a coupon (required) from their website to participate. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 5:

  • 7:00 p.m. Lowe’s Build and Grow Workshops: Make a Chalkboard Planter, your local Lowe’s. Build and Grow Clinics are free to the public, register at Lowe’s.

Friday, May 6:

  • 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Attend Hawthorn Gardens {Hawthorn Woods} Mother’s Day Planter Event and either bring a planter or buy a planter, and fill it! (Prices vary based on plants and soil; assistance is free). Please check website for registration information.

Saturday, May 7:

  • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. FREE Kids Workshops at the Home Depot: Angry Birds Birdhouse, your local Home Depot. Register online in advance.
  • 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Drop-in at the Cook Memorial Public Library District, Cook Park Library {Libertyville} to make a card for mom. We supply the materials; you provide the creativity for this DIY program. For families with children age 3 and up.
  • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Michaels KIDS CLUB: Paper Flowers, your local Michaels. $2 per child; register online in advance.
  • 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Michaels Fun Family Craft Time, your local Michaels. Have fun crafting a bracelet and card for Mom. FREE event; supplies included. See a store associate to join the fun!
  • 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Cook Memorial Public Library Public District, Aspen Drive Library {Vernon Hills}. Make a gift to show mom that your love for her grows: We’ll supply flowerpots and paints for you to decorate; you supply the plant and love. Registration for this program closes on Friday, May 6 at 2 p.m.

Sunday, May 8:

  • 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Spend Mother’s Day at Color Me Mine {Vernon Hills}, where everyone is invited to paint, enjoy some refreshments and a selection of yummy goodies. Mom will receive a free studio fee!

Visit one of the following art studios at any time and they can help you pick out, and create a gift for mom. Most studios have daily drop-in times and projects in most price ranges. Call ahead to make sure they have room and choose a simple painting or jewelry craft if you want to take it home that day.
