We all want our kids to learn to eat healthy and wholesome food but let’s be realistic, sometimes we need to let someone else do the cooking. Kids menus can leave a lot to be desired in terms of health and wholesome food. The National Restaurant Association is trying to fix that with it’s Kids LiveWell program.
Restaurants are responding to the initiative and so far 42,000 restaurants nationwide have signed on to provide healthful menu choices for children. This includes national chains like Cosi, Rainforest Cafe and Jamba Juice as well as regional and independent restaurants.
The Kids LiveWell program empowers parents and kids to choose restaurants that offer health options by using their Healthy Dining Finder or the Free Kids LiveWell App. “The Kids LiveWell options emphasize healthful ingredients such as lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains – the ingredients that kids need lots of to be at their best” Anita-Jones Mueller, President of Healthy Dining.
To participate in the Kids LiveWell program restaurants must agree to offer and promote a selection of qualifying menu items based on leading health organizations recommendations, including the USDA Dietary Guidelines. The focus is on increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains while limiting total calories, unhealthy fats sugar and sodium.
Participating restaurants and their qualifying items can be found on HealthyDiningFinder.com, and also via a free Kids LiveWell App
