Little McHenry County: Williams Street Festival~ A Must-Do this Summer

Little Lake County parents are active, mobile and always seeking adventure! Sometimes we even traverse outside of our fair county to find family entertainment beyond our borders. Due to popular reader demand, we introduce “Little McHenry County,” a monthly column dedicated to finding fun with our neighbors to the west, written by McHenry County Moms in the know. Explore and enjoy!

Little McHenry County is supported by the Raue Center for the Arts.

Calling all former city dwellers who miss summer street festivals! Here is your chance to avoid a drive into the city, bring your kiddos out, and show them the awesome combination of listening to live music while enjoying fantastic local grub and brews, and spending some time together in the great outdoors. (There will be port-o-lets and likely a mosquito or two, so this definitely counts as outdoorsy time in my book.)

On Saturday, June 4th, 2016, Williams Street, between Brink and Crystal Lake Avenue, will be closed to all traffic for the first ever Williams Street Festival, hosted by the Raue Center for the Arts. Located right in the heart of historic downtown Crystal Lake, this setting will give Williams Street a true street festival vibe.

The best part of all–admission is FREE!  This festival is open to all ages from 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

The festival will feature two bands throughout the evening, Lava Rock and Modern Day Romeos. Lava Rock is a powerful classic rock band, known for performing hits by Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, and many others. Modern Day Romeos is another rad cover band with a unique and high-energy style that spans from music from the 80’s to today’s hits, with comedy and medleys thrown in to keep the crowd bouncing. Modern Day Romeos will celebrate their 5th annual ten-year anniversary party at the festival–which means they will bring it!

Street performers, local food vendors, beer from Crystal Lake Brewing, and a raffle will make this a fun, family-friendly event.  Imaginez Emsemblez Street Performers will also take the street for the event, and will include jaw-dropping acts such as a magician/juggler/fire eater, a fire spinning duo, and a stilt walker/entertainer.  Did I mention that it is free to attend? If you would like to purchase a fundraiser ticket for $40, you can do this and in turn gain access to the Raue Center (which means real, flushing toilets in the restrooms, access to two private bars, free snacks, and meet-and-greet opportunities…attention groupies!) along with the bragging rights of being a VIP.

As this is the Raue Center for the Arts’ inaugural street festival celebration, let’s spread the word and make it an annual tradition in McHenry County! All proceeds from the event will go directly to support Raue Center’s mission to bring to arts to all in our community and to its core art education programs, Mission Imagination and Sage Studio.

The Raue Center has begun to provide more summer programming to offer a little something for everyone, and this festival is just the beginning. The idea of a street festival in Crystal Lake definitely got me excited. What a fun way to kick off the summer!  This is a great way to connect with your community, keep your little ones up past their bedtimes and enjoy watching the most amazing thing ever…your kids footloose and fancy-free on the dance floor.  Just hoping that one of the bands can play “Whip…”

See you there!

About Shelby Younge 40 Articles
Shelby has lived in counties across the U.S. from New York to California. She has worked in catering, public relations, and as a sales executive for a marketing and travel company before giving up her mundane life of exotic food, party planning and international binge travel for the glamour of poopy diapers and being known by name at Costco. She calls Lakewood home with her three sons and a daughter ranging in age from nine to one, and is married to her college sweetheart. Shelby enjoys cooking, exercising, coaching, church-going, wining and dining with friends and spying on her kids under the guise of “volunteering” at school. You can find Shelby dancing through the aisles of the dollar store, sporting heels and nursing her baby in the Ergo, while looking for inspiration for the next family theme day. Or, she might be chauffeuring her kiddos to one of their 1,204 activities while belting out Kids Bop (but using the original lyrics) in her gluten-free cracker-filled family truckster.
