Little Reviews: Epic! Books App

In our family, we spend a lot of time in the car. Whether it’s being shuttled to and from dance lessons, our monthly 3 hour journey to Grandma’s house, or waiting for so-and-so to be picked up/finished/ready, my three kids are on the go a lot. We also strive to be a ‘low-tech’ household. My kids aren’t into handheld video games and we don’t have a DVD player in our vehicle, so that means our car time is extra boring.

When we were planning for our 15 hour trip to Colorado this summer, I was so thrilled to find EPIC!, an app with over 25,000 picture books and chapter books, all in an online format. It was freeing to be able to hand my 2, 5, and 8 year olds a device and know that they were actually reading books- real books. Unlike a Kindle or Nook, you don’t have to purchase or check out titles. They are always available for online reading or download. We were able to filter through learning videos, audio books, and read aloud books to find subjects that they were interested in. There are easy-to-access categories such as sports, nature, history, adventure, mysteries, and more. Even my 2 year old was able to find her favorite books about dogs and have them read to her (over and over and over).

We don’t just use Epic! In the car, it’s also perfect for a little downtime while mommy is making dinner or some quiet time before bed without the stimulation of a television show. As we are getting into the school year, I know we’ll be using Epic! for school projects and book reports… all on the go! Think how easy it will be to earn those Accelerated Reader points while waiting for big sister to finish her piano lesson!

And, I know at our house, we spend a small fortune on library overdue fees. With Epic!’s monthly fee of only $7.99, I’m actually saving money since there are no additional fees and the books never expire. They are available on the web, iOS, and Android devices, so that you can take your books and educational videos with you or enjoy them at home. If you are looking for a great way to keep your kids entertained and educated with the peace of mind that they are experiencing high quality material, then sign up for a free month trial of Epic! You will get to revisit favorites (such as Goodnight Moon and A Wrinkle in Time) as well as have the ability to experience thousands of new adventures too!

What is your favorite children’s book that you’d like to have at your fingertips?
