Locally Grown is a paid partnership between local businesses and Little Lake County
Welcome to Locally Grown! Locally Grown introduces you to the people and stories behind local Lake County businesses. Today it is our pleasure to introduce you to the Hawn’s. Erin and Nick are owners of Lice Clinics of America in Vernon Hills.
Lice. Anyone who has ever spent a mind-numbing amount of hours combing through a child’s hair for lice and eggs, and an equally infuriating amount of time washing bedding and boiling brushes and combs will shudder at the mere mention of this tiny, 6-legged foe. Thanks to the minimal effectiveness of over-the-counter and prescription lice medications, and the need for extremely meticulous egg removal, many families endure repeated rounds of infestations, countless hours of lost time, and very possibly a higher blood pressure reading than when they started out.
So, what’s a frazzled parent to do? Dip the entire family in a vat of Nix? Shave everyone’s head and burn the house down? Keep the children indoors and away from other humans until they’re 18?

Enter Erin and Nick Hawn, owner/operators of the Vernon Hills Lice Clinics of America. The Hawns were both born and raised in Lake County, and have a busy life raising their five children. Nick has worked full-time for UPS for the past 15 years, and Erin has spent almost that many years working in a dental office. Opening a Lice Clinics Of America franchise wasn’t part of their plan until Erin, who had recently given birth to their fifth child, discovered that she and her four older children had all contracted head lice. As Erin sat on the edge of her bathtub crying (because who wouldn’t?) her very astute 12-year-old said “Mom, isn’t there someone who can just take care of this for us?” In desperation, Erin Googled her daughter’s suggestion and discovered the Lice Clinics of America in Deerfield.
The family immediately made an appointment, and within 24 hours they were all lice free. As Nick stated, “We would have paid a million dollars to have this taken care of.” Thankfully it didn’t cost a million dollars, or anywhere near that, but as the feeling of relief washed over them the idea to open their own franchise took root. In March 2017, the Lice Clinics of America Vernon Hills opened its doors, and they haven’t slowed down since.

Erin and Nick are clearly “people people.” They smile easily and talk openly about everything from lice (obviously) to the joys of raising kids in Lake County (Jones Island, the Grayslake Farmer’s Market, and date nights at The Vine in Grayslake, to name a few). The Hawns are steadfast in their belief that the head lice contracted by Erin and her daughters was truly a gift; one that has allowed them to offer peace of mind to Lake County families every day since the clinic opened.
It’s clear that the Lice Clinics of America is of immense value here in Lake County, and that the Hawns truly love helping others! Get to know Erin and Nick Hawn as they fill the role of guest editor next week, and as they bring you their picks for the week on our Facebook page and in our Newsletter.

Just this week and the day before school started I took my 13 year old to get her hair cut. The hairdresser found a “nit”. Not really great timing but it never is is it? I went home to research options while my daughter sobbed in her room. The pediatrician was not much help, they told me to get the over the counter medicine and treat her, I didn’t want to do this knowing that it does not always work and is labor intensive, and having arthritis made a daunting task impossible. Some web searching brought me to the Lice Clinic of Americas web site…I was pleased to see how close they were to me. They got me in right away. Nick and Erin were amazing, very calm, helpful, down to earth and most importantly knowledgeable on how to best take care of this issue. I highly recommend calling them if you find yourself dealing with a lice infestation!
