Welcome to Locally Grown! Locally Grown introduces you to the people and stories behind Local Lake County businesses. Today it is our pleasure to introduce you to Dr. Sam Weisz of Libertyville Dental Associates.
Going to the dentist is not my idea of a good time. Even as a child (especially as a child!) the dentist was a scary place to be with its bright lights, huge chairs, and shiny, sharp instruments. I remember my dad telling me that he was scared to go to the dentist as a kid, which is why he has numerous caps, crowns, and bridges today. Thankfully there is a new breed of dentist out there today who strive to make the dentist office a painless, relaxing, even fun experience. Dr. Sam Weisz of Libertyville Dental Associates is one of these dentists! While he has a ton of compassion for the people he cares for, he is partial to his youngest patients since he is a dad himself. Sam and his wife of seven years, Erika, live in Deerfield with their 2.5-year-old daughter, with another child on the way!
Growing up I knew I wanted to be in the helping professions. I always was great at helping people feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations. As I excelled in both art and the sciences, dentistry was the perfect fit for my skills and personality.
Dr. Sam doesn’t just care about his patient’s teeth, he also strives to reduce the anxiety and fear associated with going to the dentist. His passion is to make dental visits something that kids look forward to, not fear.
Dr. Sam says, “I wrote the children’s book “Sugar Bugs” with the hopes of eliminating the stigma about the dentist office. My goal now, and into the future, is to make the dentist office a comfortable place for patients around the country.”
Even at her young age, his little girl agrees!
Bayla would say ‘it’s so much fun visiting the dental office,’ I think mostly because she gets to watch TV, something she doesn’t often get to do at home, he says of his daughter. She will probably start talking about all the ways she takes care of her teeth if you ask her about the dentist. I guess I’ve trained her well!
Dr. Sam doesn’t just take care of patients in Lake County. He has traveled abroad sharing his compassionate heart and passion for dental care with patients around the world.
“I’ve done multiple dental missions that have brought me to remote areas of the world. Uganda, Africa was the latest destination. Each has taught me the importance of community. When you have great communities that pick each-other up, you hardly miss electricity, TV, cell phones, and your washer/dryer. It is easy for us to slip back into our regular routine, but I always try to bring back home that sense of community by turning off the TV and having real conversations.”
Regardless of if you have big teeth or little teeth, or if you are tall or small, Dr. Sam and the other dentists at Dental Associates of Libertyville never want you to fear the dentist. If your children develop a comfort and ease with dental appointments at a young age, they are less likely to avoid the dentist as adults.
We take it personally that every patient has a comfortable experience at the dentist. Because we are also patients of the practice, our first hand experience tells us, we need treat each of our patients like a family member. Patient comfort, conservative treatment goals, and providing the best quality care are why patients recommend their friends and family to us.
