Welcome to Locally Grown! Locally Grown introduces you to the people and stories behind locally owned Lake County businesses. Earlier in the month, we introduced you to Lisa McKernan, owner of Yoga Balance, Inc. in Grayslake. Today, we are going to learn a little bit more about what Yoga Balance, Inc. offers.
In my own fitness journey, I have explored and enjoyed many forms of activity, and one of my favorites is yoga. Often, when I have joined in a class, it is drop in or when it happens to fit into my schedule. Call me a commitment-phobe (though happily married!), the same time every weekly class has never been a good fit for me. I also enjoy a casual atmosphere, where I don’t feel like I have to pretend to be an expert. The good news is, whether you are like me or not, Yoga Balance can meet your needs.
When you first walk into the studio, you are greeted by warm, friendly faces. Everyone is very down to earth and Lisa will clearly explain exactly what you need to do and use for the class beforehand, no assuming you have been practicing yoga your entire life. And if you have, all the better, you will be directed to ways which will challenge your strength and mind. You are welcome to attend regularly, or drop in as it suits you; Yoga Balance, Inc has a variety of class times.

I had the opportunity to visit her Wednesday morning 9 a.m. Beginner Class. Having practiced yoga periodically, I had a basic grasp of the flow and the poses, but I appreciated the calm gentle reminders of what the poses were, where and how to position my body, and where I should be feeling stretches and work. As we moved through the poses, modifications were suggested if it was too difficult, or how to challenge yourself further. One pose moved seamlessly into the next and the hour went very quickly. And at the beginning and the end of each class, there is a theme or intention set, something to think about and focus on during your time in the class and throughout the week. Lisa takes great pride in putting a significant amount of thought and purpose into her weekly intentions, and it shows.

The class schedule is currently set as:

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Gentle (Heather)

If the schedule changes, it will be posted from week to week on Facebook, so its a great idea to follow them online!

If you noticed “Chair Yoga” and are wondering about that, like I was, it is a great option for folks with limited mobility due to age or injury. You’d be amazed by the kind of workout and stretching you can get from sitting in a chair!
Yoga Balance is located just east of downtown Grayslake, tucked behind a commercial area. It shares space with a physical therapy business, Grayslake Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy, whose work Lisa is a big fan of; they often are able to have a relationship where each practice can benefit the clientele. Yoga is great for PT, and vice versa.

For LLC readers, Yoga Balance, Inc. is offering an introductory drop in rate of $5 (normally $10). And if you love it, the day of your visit you can purchase class passes: 5 for $40 0r 10 classes for $80 (normally $90)
