Welcome to MADE in Lake County! MADE introduces you to the people and stories behind local Lake County businesses. Today it is our pleasure to introduce you to Dr. Katie Graber. Dr. Graber is the Owner of Graber Orthodontics with locations in Vernon Hills and Glenview.
What does Dr. Katie Graber of Graber Orthodontics love most about her job? “Making people smile!” She says.
“Feeling confident in their smile makes a huge difference for someone’s self-esteem, especially a young person.”
Having a great smile can really boost a person’s confidence, but orthodontic care is not just for looks. The proper treatment can save time, money and pain in the future. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children be evaluated for braces at dental age seven. While only 20% of youngsters require treatment at that age, it’s a great time to look at developing teeth and assess the growth of jaw structures. This early check-up also allows kids to get used to their orthodontist and familiarize themselves with the office.

Unlike other medical professions where patients are only seen occasionally, being an orthodontist means Dr. Katie gets to be part of her patients’ lives for many years. She loves having that connection to the Lake County community.
“We love our patients and want them to remember our office as the best medical or dental practice that they see.”
Dr. Katie is a third generation orthodontist. Her grandfather started the practice in 1946 and her father expanded to Lake County over thirty years ago as the area was developing. He saw many new families moving to the area and knew they would need someone to care for their teeth. The Vernon Hills location was built in 1989, and Dr. Katie joined the practice in 2004. An office in Glenview opened in late 2015 for the convenience of patients living in that area.
Graber Orthodontics has a history of using the latest and best technologies for improving patient care. They were the first office in the United States to use a computer system for organizing patient information and wrote the “Graber textbook,” which is the primary teaching and training manual for orthodontists worldwide.
Dr. Katie is also mom to two children, ages 11 and 5. She says being a mom and a business owner has taught her how to get things done. Women are capable of doing so many things, she says. As an employer people count on her and as a mom she wants to do everything perfectly. But balance is really a juggling act. She tries not to be too hard on herself.
“I try to be the best version of myself every day. Parenting and business are full of surprises. The only thing we can control are our reactions.”
What do Dr. Katie’s kids say about her business? Her son (age 11) says, “Thank goodness you use 3D mom! That other stuff is so 1900’s.” Her daughter (age 5) says “I love smiles mom, thank you for making people smile . . . and I’m so glad you make sparkly retainers too!”
