Little Lake County parents are active, mobile and always seeking adventure! Sometimes we even traverse outside of our fair county to find family entertainment beyond our borders. Due to popular reader demand, we introduce “Little McHenry County,” a monthly column dedicated to finding fun with our neighbors to the west, written by McHenry County Moms in the know. This month we look at the A Very Merry Huntley Festival.
’Tis the season to empty your energy tanks and wallets (and possibly wine bottles) as you navigate the busiest and most wonderful time of the year! In my home, December negotiates a very, very fine line between chaotic and amazing. However, we try to keep up with our annual traditions and love to take advantage of the holiday activities offered in our community. And if they are free, we appreciate them even more! This year, get into the holiday spirit early by starting a new tradition and spending some time at the FREE A Very Merry Huntley festival. On Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2, these two days of holiday cheer will help kick off your season…
A Very Merry Huntley Friday Activities
Round out your holiday shopping (or get started if you are a procrastinator like me!) at the Kris Kringle Market offering unique gift items for sale. From 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday night, this market is located at the Municipal Complex on 10987 Main Street, Huntley.
All additional Friday activities take place at the Municipal Complex as well. These include visits with Mrs. Claus, meet and greets with some of Santa’s live reindeer, crafts and activities for the kids, and free hot chocolate and s’mores. This is also where voting for the tree decorating contest takes place. Participation in the competition is open to families, individuals, clubs, non-profits and Huntley businesses, and is an exciting way to get involved. Guests should bring spare change and vote for their favorite decorated tree. The tree with the most donations wins, and all proceeds benefit the Grafton Food Pantry.
To cap off the night, head over to the Huntley Library for a free horse-drawn trolley ride through Parisek Park. Enjoy the holiday light displays as you breathe in the holiday cheer!
A Very Merry Huntley Saturday Fun
From 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, you can check out the indoor farmers market and craft fair. These are both held at the Fellowship Hall of the 1st Congregational Church (11626 Main Street, Huntley.) A variety of local vendors will be present. Various events are held throughout the day at the Town Square to keep your family entertained. You can participate in a cookie walk, experience an open horse-drawn hayride with views, make holiday crafts, or play family games. At noon, enjoy a free handbell choir performance followed by caroling with the Merry Maskers in the Square at 3:00 p.m.
Make sure you don’t miss the main event in the town square at 5:00 p.m. as Santa Claus arrives on a fire truck and lights the Christmas tree in the gazebo. Take your annual snapshot with Santa and then enjoy the holiday fireworks show, concluding the festival.
Although this is a free weekend, any donations collected during the events will go to the Grafton Food Pantry.
So have a holly, jolly holiday season and start celebrating early at “A Very Merry Huntley” celebration.
