Our Mompreuner today is Pat Block of Green Kids resale in Round Lake Beach.
Many of you readers know this amazing kids resale shop that caters to kids of all ages. Parents can bring in their gently used children’s clothing, toys, and gear, and get either store credit or cash. In return, deals on these items and more can be found in this well organized store. It also has a great little kids play area for your own children to be entertained while you browse, which is appreciated!
When her favorite resale shop, Once Upon a Child, went out of business, Pat Block decided that something had to be done to serve all the families who enjoyed the store. She knew that families needed a place like this where items are less expensive, and also could appreciate not having to pay full price when the option exists to pay much less. She got excited thinking about filling the void, and it grew from there. From the young age of 27, Pat has had ownership experience in small businesses. Although experienced, the startup of Green Kids took much more time and money than she thought it would. She was lucky to have a wonderful and very supportive family to help her. Her husband, sisters, brother, and parents chipped in to help her realize this dream. She found it extremely rewarding and reminded her of how lucky she is to have a great family network.
Obsessed with not seeing things wasted, the thing she loves most about the job is facilitating the re-use of perfectly good items. There is so much waste these days, but so much need as well. She feels very rewarded when she sees a parent of a child excited about finding something they really need or want and actually being able to afford it. Another favorite part of her job is her staff. While managing from off-site, she relies on them to make the store a success. Headed by her sister, Lynn Laughery, they work very hard to go above and beyond her expectations. She is continually amazed by them and appreciates all they do.
Managing public perception is the most challenging part of her job. It feels personal to her when things don’t go right with her business in public, so that is what she has worked on trying got get over. Her inspiration comes from her children, who recharge her spirit by being joyful and fun-loving. She also enjoys traveling to places of natural beauty.
Two years later, Pat reminds us that Green Kids wasn’t started to make money. She feels that most people don’t realize what it takes to operate a buy-outright resale store with the kind of volume that they deal with. She is very proud to provide jobs for twelve people, and provide a place for families to get money for items they no longer need instead of filling up landfills. She is also proud to provide a low cost alternative for kids items, and contribute money to local schools to further benefit local children.
