National Train Day in Lake County

National Train Day Events

May 10 is National Train Day, a day Amtrak has set aside to celebrate trains and talk about why they matter to our communities. With two little boys in the house everyday is train day around here! If you have a train lover too check out some of these fun events or activities:

Every month the North Central O-gaugers have a huge model train display at the Fremont Library {Mundelein}, you can read about it in our TribLocal  story. This month’s event is THIS WEEKEND and includes wooden train play in the children’s area starting at 1:00 p.m.

This weekend also marks the opening of the Chicago Botanic Garden Model Railroad Garden. You can explore all the major landmarks of the United States, including an erupting Old Faithful!

Really get in the spirit and wow your kids with an actual train ride! Genevieve gives you tips, tricks and some fun locations you can take the kids to in her Train Travel with Kids story.

Lambs Farm Annual Train Day is a great day for kids and families. This years event is next weekend May 17.

Toddler train lovers of the Thomas Variety will never forget riding on their beloved steam engine. Thomas Train Days comes to the Illinois Railway Museum in August. We took my son when we was almost 3 and it’s still a favorite memory of everyone involved. Buy your tickets early and note that afternoons, while it may mean missing naps, are not as crowded. Not into Thomas? The Railway Museum is worth the trip for train lovers of all ages!

See Amtrak’s National Train Day website for more information, special rates, and information on trains.
