Chiropractic Care for Runners

As an older runner,  my joints have come to depend on Chiropractic care. However, I have learned, especially when it comes to runners, that not all chiropractic care is created equal. More than once, I have been lectured that running is hard on the body. The truth is, I know it’s hard on the body, but I enjoy it, and it’s free. With four kids fitting in, exercise can be challenging. The ease with which I can work in running will always make it part of my life.

I recently visited Natural Care Chiropractic in Lindenhurst {2118 East Grand Avenue}, I knew from the moment that I walked in that this would be the office for me:

I mean a Chiro that gives running tips? Be still my heart.

Dr. Mark Freund (Dr. Mark) was attentive and thorough. He was explaining everything he was doing and why he was doing it. Dr. Mark offered suggestions for therapy in a non-pushy way. I never felt like he was trying to sell me on the office or philosophy but rather shared his expertise and passion.

Dr. Freund is trained and practices the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic method. Honestly, if you want to know all the differences, you would have to contact their office. What I know (as a non-medical person) is that you can be adjusted manually – hands-on moving, stretching, or popping – or they can use an activator which is a tool that pushes the bones back into alignment.

I preferred that he used more manipulative methods for getting my hips and back in alignment. It’s my personal preference, and he asked beforehand, which was nice. He also suggested that since I was so tight, we start with some muscular work first (massage) because it would help get things into and keep things in alignment. Medically recommended massage, I’m there! On a serious note,  it did really help, and I felt a lot better walking out than I did walking in.

I visited with my 18-month-old son in tow, and the entire staff was friendly and helpful with him. I was there for over an hour, and anyone knows that is a long time for a toddler. They brought us toys from the lobby into the rooms and didn’t mind the mess he made with his snack.

While there, he also told me about his TMJ care. I don’t have TMJ, but my husband does, and I am always interested in methods to ease and relax his jaw’s tightness. Dr. Freund practices a Cranial Suture Release procedure (the only physician in the Chicago Area to do it) that uses chiropractic care as an integral part of the therapy providing longer-lasting results.

Natural Care Chiropractic is more than a chiropractor; it offers overall natural health care in a non-pushy way ( I was never encouraged to buy supplements or see a listing of other specialists). The office staff includes an RD, LDN, who offers nutrition counseling and support for those seeking nutritional advice and/or a good diet plan.  The office also offers Nutrition Response Testing, acupuncture, massage, and Homeopathy services.

I plan on making Natural Care Chiropractic my new Chiro home. They take almost all insurance, so call today to make an appointment and confirm the level and type of coverage.
