It Starts with Me: Give Back Event with GLCU

The world can use a bit more kindness these days. It’s why we’ve partnered with Great Lakes Credit Union to showcase Kirby Kids. Kindness isn’t big and grand gestures it’s hundreds of little things done every day by ordinary people.

Kindness starts at home, with actions that are caught not taught.

Kindness starts with me, and doing what I can with what I have.

As part of our Little Lake County Gives Back program we have partnered with GLCU to give families an opportunity to spread kindness through two hands on parent/child volunteer events. These events will allow parents and children to give back to their community in a hands on way. Working side by side to help a charity.

Our first event is Monday May 15, 2017 from 9:30 -11:30 am.

We introduced you to Bernie’s Book Bank back in 2012.  Since then the charity has continued to grow and has moved to a new facility in Lake Bluff.  Bernie’s Book Bank’s mission is to collect, process and distribute quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school age children throughout Chicagoland. The Book Bank is a Lake County grown charity that serves not only our Lake County at-risk youth but those throughout the Chicagoland region.

Parents and children will be working side by side at their warehouse in Lake Bluff to sort and sticker books. This is an activity that is suited for the whole family! Children as young as preschoolers can help and feel they are making a difference.

Every Parent/Child Pair that joins us on May 15 will receive a t-shirt with our Kindness Begins with Me image (above) on it. They will also get to meet Kirby the Kangaroo from GLCU.  This event will be best suited to preschoolers and older. Toddlers that are used to being in school or groups and will follow directions are welcome, babies in arms or carriers are always welcome. Every parent in attendance will need a child and every child will need a parent. Bernie’s Book Bank requires a 1 to 4 ratio of adults to children so we are asking parents to bring no more than 2 children each.

This event is extremely limited so you need to register each parent and child to reserve your spot. Participants that register by April 1 will get to choose their shirt size, any registrants after that date will still receive a shirt but will not be able to choose a size.

To make an even larger impact we encourage you to clean off your book shelves and bring a book donation with you to the event!
