You just never know what you’ll find when you take a detour or shortcut. It’s worth wandering sometimes. When my kids and I were out recently we happened upon Lewis Park, a great little neighborhood playground in Lindenhurst. Of course we had to stop and play! Located off of Sand Lake Road between Route 45 and Grand Avenue (Route 132), Lewis Park is the perfect place for a quick stop when you’re passing through the area.

There are plenty of benches (some shaded), a drinking fountain, picnic table, and parking spaces, but no bathroom here. The park also features a nice basketball court and tennis courts. The grounds aren’t completely fenced in, but the partial fencing would do a pretty good job of corralling most little runners, especially away from the main road.

The play structure is good for all ages and includes safety railings, toddler slides, a shade canopy, big slide, and multiple climbing features. The park also has a small sand play area, bucket and regular swings, glider, and small open play house.

Lewis Park is well maintained and set in a quiet neighborhood. There aren’t lots of blind spots or places for kids to wander. It would make a nice place to sit back in the shade and read a book while your kids play freely. If you’re lucky, you may be the only ones there, too!

The different features on the play structure along with the basketball and tennis courts make this a great park to visit with your big AND little ones together.

If you’re feeling adventurous, an extension of the McDonald’s Woods Trail is located just across the street from the park. It would also make a great (but long) walk or bike ride to visit this park from the main McDonald’s Woods Forest Preserve entrance. I hope to see you there soon!
