Little Lake County is a long-time supporter of the important work of the Mothers’ Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes.  The Milk Bank seeks to assist families with preterm and ill babies by providing pasteurized donor human milk by prescription and to raise awareness about the benefits of human milk as a standard of care. Human milk fulfills a medical need to at-risk infants beyond their nutritional needs by actually helping to fight disease. Additionally, it is more easily digested by their fragile systems. For families unable to nurse a sick child, the Milk Bank will not only promote healthy beginnings but can save lives.

The Milk Bank has just secured a location donated to them in Vernon Hills.  $500,000 more  is needed to open the facility which includes the renovations to create the pasteurization lab, purchase equipment and freezers, etc.  Already there are 26 milk depots open, yet none operating in Lake County.   Plans are in motion to open a milk depot soon in Mundelein; but in the meantime,  moms can drop off donated milk at New Mother New Baby  in Northbrook and in Racine, Wisconsin.  To learn more about the requirements for becoming a milk donor, click here.
