Bright, Shiny & New! Grand Re-Opening of Vernon Area Public Library District

The Vernon Area Public Library District has been closed for the last week as they moved from their temporary library location back into their newly remodeled space. The closing and move is the final step in a $1.3million renovation project that updates the library and prepares to move it into the future.

I got to visit for a sneak peek last week, and WOW! The Library staff, the Friends of the Library, and the architects from Product Architecture + Design {Chicago} did a fantastic job making this a library for now and the future!

New technology includes iPads in the kids’ department as well as computers. You will also be able to check out iPads and other e-reading devices. The new larger study rooms have large computer screens and laptop plugins. There is also a new Digital Media Lab that features a powerful large-screen Mac workstation, outfitted with hardware and software for web and print design, video editing, photo editing, digitization, music, podcasting, and other creative pursuits!

The new Children’s area is a jewel to Lake County libraries and well worth the visit alone. Youth Service Director, Rachel Shulman, described the old children’s department as a “little adult” section; there is no confusing it now! The area is bright and colorful, filled with furniture that is just the right size for kids and still comfortable for parents.

There is a new Early Readers area where parents and kids can work together on games and activities that build reading skills. There are new velcro and interactive magnetic walls and a LEGO table, and unique puzzles and iPads.

Books are reorganized in shelving that shows off cover art. They have also made new signage that groups materials by subject so that children and parents can easily find their favorites.

We will be adding the Vernon Area Library to our list of summer activities! Even if it’s not your library and you don’t have a card, you can visit the new library starting today!
