Disney’s Mary Poppins is a timeless classic that Deerfield Family Theater has brought to life on stage.
Michael and Jane Banks go through nanny after nanny until Mary Poppins answers their ad and turns their world upside down. She takes them on various adventures, shows them how a spoonful of sugar can make everything better, how shaking hands with a chimney sweep brings good luck, but most of all, how taking care of the people in our lives is at the heart of it all.
Deerfield Family Theater performs at Caruso Middle School in Deerfield. My family was excited to join all the other theater-goers making their way in. Once we were inside, we visited the Spoonful of Sugar Snack area and then proceeded to enter the theater area. The space has a stage at the front with an orchestra pit and then slightly tiered seating with folding chairs.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is a magical word any time of year, but this production of Mary Poppins is a perfect family activity to start off the holiday season as it celebrates spending time together and caring for each other. Mary Poppins happens to be one of my favorite Disney movies. The play doesn’t match the movie, but many favorites are brought to life on the stage. There are a few times when the cast is even out in the aisles, and it was fun to watch the audience member’s faces alive with excitement as they were engrossed in the moment.
The highlight for me was to see Mary Poppins fly in and out with her umbrella and to see Bert dance up the wall and upside down during the chimney sweep song. We took our eight- and five-year-old sons to the 7:30 p.m. show, and it was longer than we expected. If you have young children, I might suggest going to the afternoon show unless you think they can stay awake. They’ll definitely have fun with the energy of the show!
I definitely recommend purchasing your tickets ahead of time as the show was very popular and there were only a few seats open in the very last row when we went. There is assigned seating and buying tickets ahead of time might help you get tickets in the middle section where you’ll get a great view of all of the magic!
We didn’t just leave the theater with smiles on our faces, our hearts were full. The cast sincerely had so much fun on stage and I could tell they felt connected to each other. I think that’s the beauty of a family theater. There were people of all ages in the cast and it felt like they were a family. Their energy along with the beautiful set, the live orchestra pit, and the production in general made the entire show a success. I’m happy to tell everyone how impressed I was with Deerfield Family Theater and excited to see what their next production will be! We’ll definitely be back!
