Sometimes I think I have the best job in the world! I get to see new books before they are even out on the shelves—just one of the many perks of being a children’s librarian. Another is that I get to share these great discoveries with you! This month, I have the inside scoop for you on some of the adorable and hilarious picture books published this year. Also, I want you to be silly with your kids. Yes. Silly. Goofy. And I think these not-to-miss books will inspire that!

Silly Books to Read Aloud

Without further ado, five of my faves:

Thank You, Octopus by Darren Farrell

Buddy is very polite, even when he doesn’t want what Octopus is offering…like a bath in egg salad! Gross! Crack up with your little ones as Octopus and Buddy go through their bedtime routine. Silly times ten!

Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads by Bob Shea, illustrated by Lane Smith

Everything about lawman Sheriff Ryan is a little bit…different. But that’s what you need to be when you are going after no-good bandits who steal your gold, kiss your cattle and insult your chili. Of all the evil things they could do! Don’t worry, with his knowledge of dinosaurs, Sheriff Ryan will prevail and then ride off into the sunset.

I’m Going to Catch My Tail! by Jimbo Matison

Kitty is having a bad dream. Don’t worry, his big fluffy tail is there to wake him up. But, now all Kitty wants to do is catch his fluffy tail! It’s a game of cat and tail and Kitty is a tricky one. Don’t worry, his tail is even better at hiding than you might think!

Flight School by Lita Judge

Penguin knows he belongs soaring the skies with the eagles, but first, he must learn to fly. He attends flight school, where his teacher and the other birds are skeptical that he will make it off the ground. After all, penguins can’t fly. Will our little bird friend live on the wind? Warning: heartwarming sensations may occur after reading.

Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen

Sam and Dave dig a hole in an effort to find something spectacular. And boy oh boy do they…almost. Everything Jon Klassen touches (illustrates) is gold and this very adorable book is no exception. Caption the dog’s facial expressions for an added laugh.
