The Food Truck craze is sweeping the nation! It was only a matter of time before mobile food mania finally hit Lake County. While not as prevalent as in metropolitan areas, you can still find your foodie fix when these trucks make the trip to our area or by hiring them for your next special event.
The key to a successful food truck experience is to scout them out online first. Find out where the food truck will be and when via their website or social media. If online ordering is available do it! Or decide what you want ahead of time from the online menu and be ready with your order. Otherwise, be prepared to wait. If the lines are any indication, the food should be worth it!
It certainly gives the phrase “off the back of a truck” a whole new (and tastier) meaning. If you’re lucky, you’ll find these Food Trucks serving in an area near you soon:
Swirl Cafe – Specializing in baked treats, fair-trade coffee and refreshing teas crafted locally. You’ll find them at area Farmers Markets in the summer months or contact them directly for custom orders or special events. Follow Swirl Cafe on Facebook for updates and locations.
Taste of Paris – Many of you may already be familiar with Chef Claude’s Restaurant and Bakery in Mundelein, whom we previously featured in our Passport to Flavor series. They also have a mobile catering truck. You have probably seen the converted blue ice cream truck, Chef on Wheels, at various Farmer’s Markets or at Tighthead Brewing Company. Contact them for your next special event and follow Taste of Paris on Facebook.
The Pizza Via – A mobile pizzeria with a real wood-fired brick oven on wheels! Hand-crafted, gourmet pizzas can come to your backyard, place of business, or special event. Follow Pizza Via on Twitter to see where they will be located each week.
The Fat Shallot – Owned and operated by husband-and-wife-duo, Sam Barron and Sarah Weitz, The Fat Shallot brings made-to-order sandwiches with a gourmet pedigree. Sam has cooked in four-star Chicago restaurants, a three-star Michelin restaurant in Spain and has traveled the globe with his wife building their culinary portfolio. Connect with The Fat Shallot on Facebook and get Fat Shallot updates on Twitter.
Chicago Pizza Boss – Don’t let the name fool you, this isn’t Chicago-style pizza, this is “Pizza Napoletana and Italian Street Food.” Neopolitan pizza is all about the dough and fresh, quality ingredients. The Boss uses 24-hour proofed artisan dough and award-winning Caputo Fresh Mozzarella and comes in both Red and White Pizza varieties. Enjoy arancini (deep-fried arborio rice balls), caprese salad, fries you need to eat with a fork and cannoli! Book them for a private event, check their schedule, or follow Chicago Pizza Boss on Facebook.
The Slide Ride – We love the stories of entrepreneurial women who trade in their corporate heels to follow their dreams, but we especially love when those stories involve sliders! Owner Nida Rodriguez and her team bring non-traditional twists to the humble slider, dressing things up with flavors like spicy Sriracha Buffalo Chicken, Korean BBQ, or Bacon Baby Burgers. Rent their Pink Lady truck for your next special event or follow The Slide Ride on Facebook and Twitter for the next foray into the Lake County suburbs.
Model Chef – You’ve heard of Iron Chef, Top Chef and Master Chef, but now allow us to introduce Model Chef, rolling up to a location near you soon. This Food Truck puts a healthy spin on your favorite comfort foods that’s almost too pretty to eat. But I think you will find a way. Order catering or follow Model Chef on Facebook and Twitter for their next walk down the runway near you.
Toasty Cheese – When someone said “Duck Bacon,” I knew I had to make a special effort to track down the Toasty Cheese truck myself for my own personal visit. Toasty Cheese brings the humble grilled cheese sandwich to a whole new level by pairing it with ingredients such as carmelized jalapenos in their Ragin’ Regan sandwich, grass-fed ribeye in their Big Blue and the elusive Duck Bacon in their Chef’s Choice sandwich. Follow Toasty Cheese on Facebook or Twitter to find their next location.
Mario’s Cart – Husband and wife Mario and Anita Ortiz are taking their treats to the streets! Together they have over 25 years experience in the food industry. Mario was born in Mexico and his wife is a 100% Italian New Yorker who now live in Chicago. Their menu reflects Mexican, Italian, and Chicago favorites like Chile Verde, Sausage & Pepper Sandwiches, Chicken Parm and Flautas. See their calendar to find out when they will be near you, or follow Mario’s Cart on Facebook or Twitter. You can also hire Mario’s Cart for special occasions.
Louie B. Fresh Mobile Kitchen & Catering – Wrapping and spinning the freshest food in town like wraps, fresh salads and hot fries! Have this catering truck at your next event or follow Louie B. Fresh on Twitter and Facebook for their next lunchtime location.
Piko – Modern Asian Street Food is what Piko brings to the sidewalks of Chicago and parking lots of the suburbs. Homemade marinades from three generations of family recipes is what imparts their distinctive taste. Pick your protein, then pick your vessel: a flour tortilla, Hawaiian Bun, Steamed Chinese Bun, or Rice Bowl. Whichever you choose, they’ll deliver the flavor! Visit their calendar or follow Piko on Facebook and Twitter.
Grill Chasers – Time to get fired up! Grill Chasers brings skewers, wings and wraps to a location near you with delicious sides like Mac ‘n Cheese or Bacon Beer Cheese Fries. Excuse me while I mop up some drool… Find their next location on their Event Calendar or follow Grill Chasers on Facebook or Twitter. They’ll carry their flame for you to your next special occasion.
Best Truckin’ BBQ – Get out of way! The Best Truckin’ BBQ is roaring down the highway to their next location delivering barbecue sandwiches, sliders and burgers served with their signature sauces. Follow Best Truckin’ BBQ on Facebook and Twitter for their next location and for catering info.
Daniel’s Raw-Paleo – Raw Foodists and Cave People often get left out of the office lunch run for pizza and subs, but not when Daniel’s Raw-Paleo is in town! Daniel knows healthy food can be satisfying and exciting and his salads are sure to please health-conscious palates. Call or email for catering, delivery or keep up with Daniel’s Raw-Paleo on Twitter for his next location.
