The Magic of the Nutcracker at The Genesee Theatre is a time-honored holiday tradition. Dancenter North’s production on Saturday, December 12, 2015,  is by far the “largest and most lavish” version of The Nutcracker in Lake County.

There is no more fitting venue than the historic Genesee Theatre in Waukegan.  Originally opening its doors in 1927, restoration and improvement efforts have allowed this “grand dame” of a theatre to surpass her former glory and help Lake County families forge new memories in her seats.

Grandiose sets, magnificent costumes, the music of Tchaikovsky, and over 100 performers serve to create the ultimate spectacle of sight and sound.

For those unfamiliar with this holiday classic, The Magic of the Nutcracker weaves the tale of Clara and her beloved Nutcracker on the night of Christmas Eve using dance and music.  The show at Genesee Theatre is a full-length performance with two acts and an intermission.

The first act depicts Clara’s 19th century Christmas Eve celebration with her family, where she receives a Nutcracker toy from her mysterious godfather,  Drosselmeyer.  That evening a battle ensues between the Mouse King and his mice henchmen versus an army of tin soldiers led by Clara’s own Nutcracker.

In the second act, Clara and her Nutcracker travel to the beautiful Kingdom of Sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy where the pair are celebrated by a parade of sweets from all over the world!

Parents of young children should be aware that this is a full, two-hour performance with no narration. Fortunately, Dancenter North also produces a shortened, 60-minute version specifically for a preschool audience titled Clara’s Dream.  This version is performed on Saturday, December 5th, 10:30 a.m. at Libertyville High School.

The full-length performance of The Magic of the Nutcracker is also available at Libertyville High School at 3:00 pm on December 5th and December 6th.  A special school performance takes place at Genesee Theatre on December 11th.
