Little Lake County’s writers and editors love visiting local destinations. After all, Little Lake County represents “LOCAL. Family. Fun.” But there comes a time when even we need to drive beyond the borders of our fair and fine county. In honor of National Travel and Tourism week, Little Lake County brings you our own writer’s suggestions for Gas Tank Getaways, Little Getaways and places that we think are “Worth the Trip” for family travel.
Wisconsin Getaways
Is Wisconsin really a destination for Lake County residents? Absolutely. Especially if you are traveling with young children and you’ve schlepped the family and all of their accompanying gear across the border to the north. Wisconsin is convenient, resembles Lake County in a lot of ways, and offers a plethora of places to go and things to do. Some of our writers’ recommendations include:
- Discovery World, Milwaukee
- Mitchell Park Conservatory, Milwaukee
- Summerfest at Henry Maier Festival Park, Milwaukee (June 28 – July 9, 2017)
- Milwaukee
- Henry Vilas Zoo, Madison
- Madison
- Great Wolf Lodge, Wisconsin Dells
- Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells
- Wilderness Resort, Wisconsin Dells
- Blue Harbor Resort, Sheyboygan
- Old World Wisconsin, Eagle
- The Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake
- Timber Ridge Lodge, Lake Geneva
- Lake Geneva (Writer Holly recommends autumn as her favorite time to visit, but it is a great year-round destination.)

Chicago Day Trips
Chicago can be a great day-trip, weekend or week-long adventure. Here are a few of our favorite kid-friendly excursions while in the Windy City:
- Maggie Daley Park
- American Girl Place
- iFly Indoor Skydiving
- Junior Ninja Warriors
- Lincoln Park
- The Shedd Aquarium
- Day-trip to Chicago for $20

Midwest Getaways
Indiana
A trip to Indiana requires expert GPS skills to effectively circumvent the city traffic. But it can be done. And once you break out of the gridlock, Melissa recommends Hamilton County, Indiana as a great family-oriented family getaway destination.
Ohio
If your family is ready for a longer trip, Little Lake County writer Cindy actually lived in Columbus, Ohio, and recently moved back to Lake County after a three-year hiatus. Read about what Cindy recommends doing in the Columbus, Ohio area and why.
Minnesota
Little Lake County writer Jennifer V. thought Water Park of America in Bloomington, MN was truly “Worth the Trip.” However, we’ve learned that the waterpark is currently closed for re-branding by Great Wolf Lodge and will be reopened sometime this year (2017). In the meantime, you can sign up for updates on the progress of the remodeled property.
Missouri
Several of our writers have travelled to St. Louis, and each had their own favorite spot to visit. Read the resulting collaborative itinerary for St. Louis and find several ideas for your next fun-filled trip.
