We’re lucky to have so many great options in Lake County that take the hassle out of birthday parties for mom and dad. With so many choices, where do you start? That’s why we’ve created the Ultimate Lake County Guide to Birthdays! Over the next several weeks we will share listings of tried-and-true birthday party locations, as well as several you may not have heard of. You are sure to find a spot to fit your child’s taste all while keeping your house clean and your sanity intact.
A few weeks ago we gave you a list of Art Birthday locations. Today’s post is for party animals and the kids that love them. Check out this list of venues offering animal encounters.
Wildlife Discovery Center, Lake Forest
Wow, do my kids love this natural history museum located in picturesque Elawa Farm. We’ve visited several times (read about it here) to get up close and personal with reptiles, amphibians, birds, and even Boris the Bobcat all for FREE.
For your child turning 4 or older, you can host an interactive event on-site where kids will learn about wildlife and meet some animals in a safe setting. Parties last 1 1/2 hours and include a 45-minute animal show followed by food and refreshments (after they wash their hands of course!) Early arrivals will be offered coloring sheets and markers and any free time at the end of the party can be used to tour the facilities. For more information visit their Birthday Party page or email carmichr[at]lakeforest[dot]com. Stay up to date on Wildlife Discover Center happenings and visit Wildlife Discovery Center on Facebook.
Lambs Farm, Libertyville (847) 362-5050
A familiar site for those traveling down I-94, Lambs Farm helps people with developmental disabilities gain self-sufficiency, pride, and respect while they contribute to the community. The Farmyard at Lambs Farm is a frequent family destination to pet barnyard animals, ride the miniature train and carousel, jump in the bounce house or play mini-golf. At the same time, The Farmyard and other Lambs Farm initiatives offer gainful employment to developmentally disabled adults and teach visiting children that though we all may have different capabilities, everyone has something to contribute. To read our previous review of Lambs Farm, click here.
For a birthday party that makes a difference, choose from a pizza party or cupcake party package that also includes unlimited access to the Farmyard, petting area, Discovery Center, rides, and miniature golf. Visit their Birthday Parties page for full details and like Lambs Farm on Facebook for all the latest news.
Patch 22, Wadsworth (847) 336-0120
A real working farm and field trip favorite. Visit with the family on Sundays from May through Halloween to pet the animals, ride ponies, or go on a hay ride.
Reserve the Party Barn from May through October for your 2-hour event where you can feed and pet the animals and take a half-hour hay ride. Include pony rides for an additional fee. Would you rather party at home? Patch 22 will come to you! For full details click here. For updates on life on the farm, visit Patch 22 on Facebook.
Didier Farms , Lincolnshire (847) 634-3291
While they offer flowers and vegetables from their greenhouse in the spring, and a farmers market in summer, children will best know Didier Farms for their Annual Pumpkinfest (read our review here.)
Birthday parties are available during Pumpkinfest only, which will run September 21-October 31, 2013. Each child receives a pumpkin, trick or treat bag, tractor hayride, access to corn maze and viewing of pigs and baby chicks. Pony rides and the exotic petting zoo may be added for an additional fee along with other options. Download their party flyer for full details.
