World’s Largest Swimming Lesson–June 24, 2016

When I was little, I would always love to look at the Guinness Book of World Records. It was just so interesting to me to see what crazy things people have accomplished.  So when I heard last year that my son could possibly take part in a record breaking event, the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, I got really excited. Especially since I did not even have to leave Lake County to do it.

The idea for the World’s Largest Swimming lesson was created in 2010 by nonprofit organizations trying to prevent drowning in children.  Since the program’s creation, more than 155,000 children and adults have participated in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, yet drowning is still the second leading cause of death in children under 14. However, with swimming lessons and proper education it can be prevented.

This year the World’s Largest Swimming lesson is taking place on Friday, June 24th. It is a completely free, 30-minute lesson. Who can pass up a free swimming lesson? In the past, the lesson would always be at 10:00 a.m. and everyone all over the world would be doing it at the exact same time.  This year they are taking a different direction.  It will be up to the individual pool as to what time the event will start, and hopefully, more children can take advantage of this opportunity. The lesson, developed by water safety experts, is a beginner’s lesson, so no mater what the individual skill level is, everyone can participate!
